Death is something that comes to all of us who are human beings stranded on this earth. There are other living creatures of a celestial nature who do not die but masquerade as humans...but that is another story.
When I was a child I never thought of death. When I was a teenager I never thought of death. When I was a young man I never thought of death. But from the age of 40 on, the thought kept increasing till now it is a serious concern.
If you pick up a good concordance or a topical bible somewhere along the way, you will find several pages devoted to death in the scriptures.
I do mean several pages. It is a serious subject.
There are a couple of things that stand out in the bible. One is that we all
will someday stand in front of the Lord and listen as He reads the highlights of our life here on earth. The other is that the good ones will go up and the bad ones will go down. Every single one of us will be counted.
The Old Testament and New Testament have much to say about it. They almost universally say that there is a living body and a spirit. The two are entirely different and separated. But they make up our bodies on earth.
John says that we will be changed in the twinkling of an eye. He says that we shall not all sleep but we all shall be changed. Daniel says that many of us in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Then, in Ecclesiastes, that we shall return to the dust of the earth as it was and the spirit shall return to God who gave it. And Jesus said, fear not them which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul. He also told the two that were on the crucifix beside Him that today they would be in paradise with Him.
Then in Revelations we read that God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow nor crying. Neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away.
But then, also in Revelations, we read that the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all the liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
That should be enough to keep you scared stiff for a while. I'll have more later. God willing.
